Privacy policy
- No accounts, no ads, no analytics, no tracking across apps or websites.
- Your location is used on your phone and is never sent to us.
- Our server sees which stops, routes and trips the app asks about, not who you are.
- We don't sell or share personal information, and nothing from the app trains AI models.
This policy covers the BTV Transit app for iPhone (bundle identifier dev.thebt.btvtransit) and the server it talks to. It is published by 802 Software, LLC ("we", "us"), South Burlington, Vermont, which is responsible for the data described here. Visits to this website are covered by the 802.software privacy policy.
What the app uses, and why
| Data | What happens to it | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Your location | Used on your phone to find nearby stops, plan trips from where you are, and follow a ride you start so the app can alert you before your stop. Never sent to us or anyone else. | Not stored by us |
| Timetable and live-data requests | The app asks our server for timetables, live bus positions, predicted times and service alerts. Requests name stops, routes or trips, not you or your location. | Not kept beyond logs |
| IP address and app version | Seen by our server and its hosting provider with every request, as with any website. Used only to run and secure the service, and not combined with anything else. | Short-lived operational logs |
| Notification token and saved stops and routes | Only if you save a stop or route and allow notifications. Used only to send you service alerts about what you saved. | Until you remove everything you saved, or the token stops working |
| "Bus didn't come" answers | Only if you answer. The trip, stop, date, scheduled time and your answer, plus a one-way hash of a random key made on your phone, used to keep one answer per bus and limit misuse. Not linked to your token or to you. | 90 days |
| Class schedules, campus, pinned places | Stored and used only on your phone. Never sent to our server. | Until you delete them or the app |
| Emails you send us | Used to answer you and fix what you reported. | As long as needed to resolve it |
Location in more detail
Location is optional. During a ride you start, the app keeps using location while your phone is locked so the alert still arrives; iOS shows a location indicator while it does, and ending the ride stops it. Without location the app still shows times and lets you search, and it can alert you by the timetable instead.
"Bus didn't come" answers
Other riders see only a count, such as "2 riders say the 8:22 didn't come". Transit agencies may receive weekly totals by route, stop and hour, without keys. No answer includes your location, name or account.
Who else is involved
- Apple provides the map, place search, location services and notifications. What you type in the search box is sent to Apple to suggest places, under Apple's privacy policy. If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in iOS Settings, Apple may give us crash reports that don't identify you.
- Google Firebase Cloud Messaging delivers alert notifications. The Firebase library in the app creates an installation ID to do so.
- Heroku (Salesforce) hosts our server, and Vercel hosts this website. They process data only to provide that hosting.
- vermont-gtfs.org, Swiftly and the National Weather Service supply timetables, live bus data and weather to our server. Your phone does not contact them, and they receive nothing about you.
We do not sell or share personal information, including for targeted advertising, and we do not use data brokers. We do not use any data from the app to train large language models or other AI models. We would disclose information only if the law required it, and only the little we hold.
Children
The app is suitable for riders of all ages but is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. A parent who believes we hold such information can email us and we will delete it.
Your choices and rights
- Turn location or notifications off at any time in iOS Settings.
- Remove your saved stops and routes in the app to delete your notification token from our server.
- Delete the app to remove everything stored on your phone.
- Email info@802.software to ask what we hold for your phone, to correct it, or to delete it. We answer within 30 days. Because there are no accounts, we may ask for details such as the stops you saved to find your records; removing them in the app deletes your token at once.
These rights apply to everyone, wherever you live. Residents of states with their own privacy laws, such as California, and Vermont once its Data Privacy and Online Surveillance Act takes effect, may have additional rights, and we will honor them. You won't be treated differently for using any of them.
Security
The app talks to our server only over encrypted HTTPS. We keep as little as we can, store answer keys only as one-way hashes, and limit access to the server to the people who run it. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affected your information, we would tell you as the law requires.
Where data is processed
Our server and its providers are in the United States.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date above changes with it and the new version is posted here. We will describe material changes in the app's release notes before they take effect.
